Practice-management and legal-AI suite

Clio: what to evaluate

Do you need matter management, client intake or AI-assisted legal work, and which product covers it?

Clio is a suite, not one like-for-like contract-review product. Start by naming the operational problem and the particular product proposed to solve it. A decision about running matters is different from a decision about checking AI-assisted research or drafting.

What the vendor says

  • Clio's UK page presents Manage for practice management, including matters, billing and deadlines. Clio UK: Manage

  • It presents Grow for client intake and onboarding. Clio UK: Grow

  • It presents Work for AI-assisted research, review and drafting. These product descriptions should not be transferred across the suite. Clio UK: Work

These are attributed product descriptions, not verified performance results.

What remains unresolved

Jurisdiction and availability

A UK marketing page was reviewed. Each feature's regional availability and accuracy in the relevant UK jurisdiction remain unresolved.

Hosting

Unknown. Product-specific storage, inference and backup regions have not been verified.

Training and retention

Unknown. Provider training, retention and contractual restrictions have not been verified for each product.

Integrations

Unresolved. No individual connector has been tested; a suite-wide integration count is not proof of compatibility for your configuration.

Your evaluation checklist

Use the following as a proposed test, not a report of tests Margo Legal has run.

  1. Map each required capability to a named product, plan and regional release. Ask the supplier to identify dependencies rather than accepting a demonstration of the suite as proof that everything is included.

  2. Trace one authorised sample matter from intake through the required work. Check which product holds the record, who can access it and where information is copied.

  3. For AI research or drafting, have a qualified reviewer check cited authority, jurisdiction, currency and factual support. Keep this test separate from the practice-management evaluation.

  4. Confirm migration, export, deletion, connector and security obligations for each product. Test a usable export and the access restrictions needed by the firm.

  5. Decide whether the workflow requires replacing the practice-management system, adding a specific AI product or neither. Compare the implementation and supervision burden as well as the demonstrated feature.
